Thank you letters/notes are not quite as important as a cover letter, although if you are applying for a position and want to bring yourself on a more personal level with the potential employer after an interview, having an appreciative thank you letter could give you that last little bump you need to land the job. Never underestimate the competition you are up against, because it is almost guaranteed that they will be trying just as hard as you to get the position.
