It’s easy for us to lose control of ourselves during a stressful transition into a new career or while working in a high-pressure environment dealing with difficult situations for a living. Maintaining a positive attitude can seem hard or impossible at times, but it is extremely important to the longevity of our successes that we find a way to sustain an optimistic outlook. Attitudes are contagious and it is up to ourselves to ensure that our own attitudes influence the outcomes that we desire.
In the earlier stages of my career, I attended a business management/sales seminar in Atlanta, Georgia taught by Zig Ziglar, a famous motivational speaker. The one thing I remember from his lectures was “your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” What he means by this is that our attitudes are contagious, paving the way to our successes or failures.
Sometimes we all hit a rut where we get so emotionally beat up by the daily grind that we just want to “throw in the towel” so to speak. Whether it’s dealing with a ruthless boss or being turned down application after application during a job search, we easily get discouraged and form an attitude of defeat. However, make no mistake, others around you can sense this kind of attitude and it can hinder your career in more ways than you think. This especially is a problem during a job search campaign. If the interviewer can sense that you have a negative attitude in any way, it could cost you the opportunity.
On the other hand, a positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive ideas and results. It is a catalyst of extraordinary benefits that will eventually help you overcome your immediate obstacles. The reason for this is that, for the most part, successful people are drawn to positive people. Whereas pessimistic people often have chaotic lives created by their refusal to have an optimistic outlook on certain life experiences. While a positive attitude more than likely will not get you immediate results, it will carry you through each difficult situation and help elevate your career much quicker.
10-Point Checklist for Maintaining a Positive Attitude:
1. Learn one new technique every day.
2. Listed to understand, talk to be understood.
3. Look professional – your appearance speaks of your mood.
4. Deliver on all promises to everyone – your conscience will thank you.
5. Realize that objections often indicate interest by employers.
6. Use questions to get or keep control of conversations during interviews.
7. Speak like you are talking to friends, but stay professional.
8. Present yourself to help, not for money.
9. Use humor – everyone sees this as positive.
10. Believe in yourself no matter what anyone tells you.
In summary, employ a positive attitude with everything you do in life. Developing a commitment to do this will transform a promise into reality. Words speak boldly of your intentions, but actions speak louder than the words. Commitment is the stuff character is made of and holds the power to change the face of things. A positive attitude is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism and will help all of your dreams come true.
