What Mentally Strong Job Seekers Shouldn’t Do

There are many things that a mentally strong job seeker shouldn’t do during a career change and signs to indicate that it might be time for you to make a quick adjustment in how you handle certain things. In 2008, the United States began to see massive layoffs which forced millions of Americans to face the challenge of looking for a new venture after many years, even decades, on the job. This forced many people into a life of craziness trying to make drastic life changes to adapt to something new.

Since then, the job market and economy have seen slight progress toward positive numbers, but there is always the risk of layoffs in such a competitive world so it is good to always be prepared. While some forced career changes are unforeseen, many of them can been identified earlier by employees who are prepared for the head chopping which will help to maintain their sanity.

Making a major life-changing adjustment can be difficult for most, especially when you have been with the same job for 20-something years and have no idea how to market yourself in today’s extremely competitive job market. A change such as this can be very stressful and even drive some into complete insanity.

Below are things mentally strong job seekers shouldn’t do and things that can be done to make sure “you know what” doesn’t hit the fan.

1. They Shouldn’t Avoid a Necessary Career Change
Mentally strong job seekers shouldn’t try to avoid a career change, even if it scares them. Instead, they welcome positive change into their lives and are willing to bend a little in their career path. They understand that a career change is eventually unavoidable and do not doubt their abilities to adapt.

2. They Shouldn’t Waste Time Feeling Sorry for Themselves
Mentally strong job seekers shouldn’t feel sorry for themselves about their unemployment circumstances or how others have treated them. They shouldn’t sit around depressed all day wishing things were different. Instead, they take responsibility for their failures and understand that life isn’t always easy or fair. They realize their past failures and can harness what they’ve learned from it. Nevertheless, they shouldn’t constantly dwell on bad experiences or reminisce about the successful days. Instead, they pick themselves up, live for the present, and plan for the future.

3. They Shouldn’t Let Others Bring Them Down
They shouldn’t allow others to bring them down through negative remarks or reminders of their failures. They shouldn’t say things like, “My boss makes me feel bad,” because they understand that they are in control over their own emotions and they have a choice in how they respond. They also shouldn’t allow others to affect their moods in any way.

4. They Shouldn’t Complain About Things They Can’t Control
You will never hear a mentally strong job seeker complaining over lost wages, being laid off, having a jerk for a boss, lack of interviews, etc. Instead, they should concentrate on what they can control in their careers and realize the only thing they can control is how they respond and their own attitude.

5. They Shouldn’t Worry About Making Everyone Happy
Mentally strong job seekers realize that they shouldn’t worry about making everyone happy, even the people interviewing them or reviewing their resumes. They’re not afraid to reject an opportunity if it doesn’t suit their needs or speak up when necessary. They try hard to be respectful, but can also handle other people being offended if they didn’t make them happy.

6. They Shouldn’t Fear Taking Risks
They shouldn’t take irresponsible or thoughtless risks, but shouldn’t mind taking thoroughly planned risks. Mentally strong job seekers spend time analyzing the risks and benefits before making a decision, and educate themselves of the potential negative aspects before taking action.

7. They Shouldn’t Make the Same Mistake Twice
Mentally strong job seekers accept responsibility for their own behavior and learn from their past mistakes. As a result, they shouldn’t make the same mistake twice. Instead, they move ahead and make better decisions in the future.

8. They Shouldn’t Resent Other People’s Success
Mentally strong job seekers do not become jealous or angry at other people’s success in life. Instead, they recognize that success is a reflection of character, not the other way around, and they are willing to work harder for their possibility at success by demonstrating their own optimistic character.

9. They Shouldn’t Feel the World Owes Them Anything
Mentally strong job seekers shouldn’t feel entitled to anything in life. They weren’t born with a mentality that others would take care of them or that the world owes them something. Instead, they look for rewards based on their own accomplishments throughout their careers and realize that we all have a fair chance to get out and make something of ourselves.

10. They Shouldn’t Expect Immediate Results
Whether they are working on improving their resumes or getting a their name out there, mentally strong job seekers shouldn’t expect immediate results. This does not mean they shouldn’t hope for the best, but they do have enough common sense to know that it takes time to find a new job and things more than likely will not fall into place overnight.

11. They Shouldn’t Give Up After Failure
Mentally strong job seekers never see failure as a reason to give up. Instead, they use failure as an stepping stone to nurture and improve existing skills so they may overcome possible future failures.

Making a major life change such as a new job can be an extremely stressful time in one’s life. It can create stress not just in your life, but also in the people’s lives around you such as your family. Keeping your head on straight during this time is probably the single most important thing you can do.
